What does a new manager need to do?

Post by Sandie on Sun Oct 25, 2015 3:30 pm

Thought it would be good to separate the issue of 'what they need to do?' from 'who's next?'.

As things stand, we find ourselves bottom and are TWO wins from safety. A new manager needs to hit the ground running to brighten the situation and being a helpful forum I thought we could all chip in with a 'to do list' of pressing issues and things the new manager needs to be aware of.

The trite thing to say is 'WIN SOME BLOODY GAMES' but what needs to be done to accomplish that?

Most important thing for me, is that the new manager needs to establish his best XI. It was something Sherwood never did manage to do and whilst you'd think that it's going to be more difficult coming into things two months into the season though we'd also hope that the new manager is not some kind of blagging charlatan.

With regard to players, I think any new manager should be aware that Lescott's day appears to have gone, Guzan has become very wobbly and Gabby isn't really much use any more so these will need to be dealt with.

What else does our next manager need to do to steer the ship away from the rocks?

Keep Gabby as far away from the first Xl, look at what we have, creativity and someone good in the air.

Oh and either sort Guzan out or bin him.

We just need a manager whos going to attack, I dont mind losing as long as we try! This season that just has not happened. Get rodgers in and lets start attacking and have a right go!!

New keeper, and find their best team quickly.

Then win games. Lots of them.

He needs to quickly identify the best system for our players and then he has to play the players that suit the system, regardless of age, stature, reputation or experience.

With Garde now appointed, time to discuss this a bit more, I think.

The thing that has been most consistent here is that he's dealing with short term horizons. Everything he has to work on needs to be accomplished very quickly before he can start to look at any type of long term plan.

An important thing to do that's not been mentioned is that I think he needs to bridge any divide at the club. Have the moneyball players and the established players become two separate factions? They need to be brought together and any bad influences need to be bombed out to ensure that everyone is pulling together and singing from the same hymn sheet in order to keep this club in the Premier League.

If it has become a problem then it needs to be his number one priority.

Agree with the above. To add,
He needs to be clear on who his staff are and make sure they're in place asap!
He needs to address the training methods and implement solid tactics during these sessions. Gary Neville has pointed out a few times now the bizarre defensive shape we have. Little things like this need addressing.
He needs to install confidence into the squad and purpose/ Players like and need to know what their roles are. Too many look like they don't have a clue.

A combination of the best system/aligned with the best XI for that system and drilling it into them day after day and keeping it consistent will hopefully bring about a bit of fluidity and familiarity and subsequent confidence and results.......

We can hope right?!
