Liked that and glad to feel that I'm right to have faith that all is not lost and we still stand a decent enough chance of surviving. It's early days and we have a chase on but it's not a foregone conclusion we will go down.

Had a look at the tables to see how bad the situation was for those clubs. As we all know, we are four points from safety and I was wondering if those clubs were less far adrift. Palace were 6 points from 17th at that early stage and, in fact, the teams who went down were Norwich who were five points ahead, Fulham who were seven points ahead and Cardiff who were nine points clear. Southampton stayed up from 5 points adrift and Wigan were seven points clear at that point but went down instead. Tottenham weren't far adrift at ten games but finished well up in the league and sacked Ramos when on 2 points after 8 games.

I see fans saying we have to get another 36 points or we're relegated, but the fact is that we need to score six more points than another three teams in the bottom five to be safe.

It's time to see how good our new signings can be, with proper coaching, team selection and tactics.

The 40 point yardstick is usually more than enough to ensure safety, looking over the last few seasons in only one of them did it go to 39/40 points being the difference between safety and the Championship. One season it was 30/31 and generally it's somewhere between 35 and 38 points. 28 games left, 84 points at stake and as far as the players and new manager should be concerned our season starts here.

Hoping for a draw between Bournemouth and Newcastle, 1-0 to Newcastle as things stand.

Bournemouth have lost 1-0. A total travesty of a result given their domination of the game .... but you have to put the ball in the net, and without Calum Wilson that's a problem for them.

Newcastle have a six point cushion over Villa and it's totally undeserved!

We need to start getting unexpected points now. Two wins from safety and with clubs around us in far better form is not a good place to be, even though we are out of position considering the players we have.

Part of the problem is we're in this battle with two other big clubs. The kind of clubs who have good players and who will always be quick to make changes should they feel they are in trouble. Newcastle have found a kind of form and both us and Sunderland have changed managers. Bournemouth genuinely played very well indeed today but even accounting for the almost inevitable collapse into the relegation zone of a team who seem comfortable early on only two (at best) of the current bottom four can remain in the league.

I think we need perhaps Norwich and Watford (I know Watford are currently on 16 points) to 'collapse' back into the bottom three at some stage, although to be fair both teams have played some good football this season .... but so have Bournemouth. In January club resources could decide who stays up and who goes down.

But that might bring Swansea in to things.

The problem with that is Swansea have a good enough squad to survive, Norwich will need luck to survive with their squad.

If we assume that Chelsea will get their act together at some stage, then it's getting a bit lonelier at the bottom of the league.

A win tomorrow and things will start to look a hell of a lot brighter, a convincing loss and it looks pretty grim. That said our season won't be defined by tomorrow, but the further 26 games we have left. After tomorrow's game Remi will get a bit of time and space with the player and his coaches to take a good look at things, on the pitch and in the analysis of previous games and all the stats!

We shouldn't have that many away on internationals should we? Either way RG will get a bit of breathing space to exhale and take a much wider look at the situation. A win or a draw would just be a dream to be honest and just the tonic to work with.

I don't expect anything until we play Watford. Any points before then would be a pleasant surprise.

Just said elsewhere that I expect the international break to be very important. Don't think many will be away, none of the French lads are full internationals so far as I'm aware and certainly none of the English players will be. Only one I can really think we'll be without is Sanchez?
