Aston Villa v Middlesborough Sat30th July 3pm.

Post by villabromsgrove on Sat Jul 30, 2016 11:19 am

I think this match just about deserves it's own thread. We should get an insight into who RDM thinks are his strongest eleven. I'm betting it will be defensive and hardworking, but I'm hoping we'll see some Villa attacking because I'm going to this one. Yes, VB is dusting off his faithful old Villa shirt and going to Villa Park! Am I going to see a win? What do you reckon guys?

Will they have commentary this time, I wonder?

Have a good time at the game, VB. As for the score, friendlies like these are always unpredictable!

It's BBC WM commentary with Tony Morley summarising.

Boro have offered little. Not convinced by our central midfield (Gardner has pinged a couple of decent balls round but generally we're not showing much in that area). Grealish needs to work on his end product.

I said after that highlights reel that Golini was too fond of a parry and it cost us (well, as much as a goal in a friendly can) there. There was poor defensive play in the buildup too.

Ayew playing too deep, midfield ineffective and Gestede invisible.

3-1 Boro. It's just like watching us last season. Boro have not been impressive at all. Woeful defensive organisation for both.

I enjoyed going to Villa Park in the sunshine. The team looked remarkable well set up in the first half. We pressed and harried and looked really committed most of the time .... but. I didn't realise that the reason we made Middlesborough look ordinary was because they weren't particularly bothered. That changed in the second half (after a b*ll*cking by Karanka no doubt) and we quite simply couldn't cope with their new found pace and aggression. We reverted to last seasons shape and tactics almost certainly by default. How many other teams play with two at the back and both full backs stranded 70 yards up the pitch? It's a wonder Middlesborough attackers could run for laughing!

There were about ten thousand fans or less in the stadium at full time, and they gave the team a rousing round of prolonged applause for a couple of minutes at least. I can only think that it was for the effort the players put in because they ran and pressed all match. It certainly wasn't for the mental toughness, technique or tactics!

I genuinely thought that Bacuna was one of our best performers today (along with Baker). Doesn't say much for the rest of them, does it.
