Wycombe V Aston Villa: Saturday 9th January at 12:45

Post by Sandie on Mon Jan 04, 2016 4:45 pm

Here we have some respite from our parlous league form with an away day to a League Two team in the cup.

The match is against Wycombe who are sixth in League two and will give us an answer to the question 'are we so bad we can't beat a fourth tier team?'. Don't really know much about them other than the fact that at least three of our ex-managers managed them (Gregory, O'Quitter and Shambert) which I've always found interesting. Not sure that makes us any more likely to beat them!

So what will happen at Adams Park? Will we get a rare confidence boosting win? Will there be a shock? Is the FA Cup an unwanted distraction or something to play for now that our season is over in most depressing fashion? Should we play a strong team, try out some different tactics or just field the kids? Lots to discuss folks so jump on in with your predictions and views on the game and the cup itself.

I think this is going to be one of those cup shocks. Yes, that's right I think Villa are going to win a game!

2-1 Villa win.

I think it could be a cracking game with a few goals. We'll win if we play a few kids to add passion and an eye for goal to the side. If we play our usual wasters, I hope Wycombe teach us a lesson in lower league football.

Prediction .... usual rubbish 3-2 loss.

Speaking to a few other fans and they all see this as a needless distraction or a chance of further embarrassment.

I disagree. Our season is over and we have nothing else to play for. A good cup run might also enhance our confidence and reduce embarrassment in the rest of the season.

I don't think he'll risk injuries to those he sees as key players. We play Palace three days later, and Leicester four days after that.

I know that the reality is that we're doomed, but Remi will still want to give himself a chance of doing the unthinkable. For that reason I expect to see fringe players get a run out alongside bench warmers at Wycombe.

Agree that it won't be a full strength lineup due to the number of fixtures we have this time of year but a weakened team might still be enough to win, especially if we consider how they won't be have had their confidence knocked by being in a team that gets beaten most weeks.

Who would be in contention for a start? Gardner? Lydon? Maybe Bunn in goal?

As to the point about Remi still wanting the chance of doing the impossible, I'm not sure the club know what to do any more. They had no doubt been planning on giving Remi backing to get his own players to keep us up but the disappointing results over the festive period has made that almost impossible.

Gardner, Lydon, either Kinsella or Bennett, Crespo, Ilori, Mason, and either Sellars or Hepburn-Murphy.

That's seven lads desperate to play. Add them to Bunn, Okore (captain), N'zogia and Kozak and we've got a team.

A reserve team but what the heck!

Wycombe are 13-5 to win, considering they're a league two team that's short odds. I've got considerably better odds than that in the past betting on a Premier League side beating another PL side.

I think we'll win, but we deserve a good stuffing!

I'm torn on whether I want us to win this or not. Do we need the distraction of more cup games to further reduce our slim chances of survival? Do we need the D-list pundits further ragging this great club of ours? Or would a win spark a PL revival?

A win would be an exciting novelty, but you're right, even though we're 99.9% relegated we don't need the distraction. We need to have players fit and win some games in the last four months of the season, to build a bit of confidence for the Championship.

I'm not sure a cup run could make us any worse. I think a defeat would be yet another massive embarrassment heaped onto a massive pile of them.

They could probably throw him on in attack and he would cause problems for our defence!

Micah Richards has to play right back today. It's a golden opportunity to change the solidity of our back line .... Richards .. Okore .. Lescott .. Cissokho.
